Philippines’ SteelAsia halts operations at Calaca scrap recycling plant

Philippines-based SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. has halted operations at its flagship Calaca scrap recycling plant, the company said in an Oct. 26 statement.

The company did not specify when operations were halted or when they would resume.

Calaca Works in Batangas province is the Philippines’ only integrated steel works facility, hosting a rebar production line with a capacity of 500,000 mt/year, according to SteelAsia’s website. The site recycles scrap that is cast into semi-finished steel called billets, which are then charged into the rolling mill facility.

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed 5SP 130 mm billets at $450/mt CFR Manila Oct. 24, unchanged day over day.
